Okinawa, an island located between japans main island and taiwan, stretches out over 100 km in the pacific. Approaching the airport from the north we first see cliffs and green forests emerging from the sea, surrounded by a stripe of a deep turquoise color. The island is long, but not very wide, descending southwards we watch the first houses appear, roads become more and more dense. Through the afternoon mist we see smaller islands rising out of the blue. Another turn, roofs and roofs and roofs. We land in Naha.

After leaving the airport we step into the bus 120. It takes its time entering Naha, we pass the prefectural office, the main shopping street Kokusai-dori, the port. On the left the ocean, on the right buildings, buildings and military bases. After passing Yomitan, green colors begin to dominate over grey and blue and after 64 stops we finally arrive at the Okinawa Institute for Science and Technology.

Two hours from Naha, the Zamami islands lie scattered in the East Chinese Sea. We get off the ferry at a small village, a short walk and we are alone. White beaches, the ocean blue and transparent. The sun sets peacefully. At night we lie in the sand and watch the milky way, we listen to the waves and the hermit crabs crawling in the bushes.
