to avoid the crowds, I visited fushimi-inari at sunrise. I shared the mountain with a jogger and two businessmen, they hurried past me swinging their briefcases and threw their coins at the altars. with their hands clapping they reminded me even more of praying machines. at the lower levels you can really feel the touristic spirit being burnt into this sanctuary, instinctively I reach for my camera. eventually the vibe of a forest sanctuary starts to hit. at the top I throw 10 yen at the altar, but they jump back at me (scary)
